Java v7u51 don't check for updates Empty Java v7u51 don't check for updates

Since, based on the release note, there is a known delivery issue with the "Check for Update Automatically" option in the PP for Java v7u51, and that check box is grayed out, any other tricks to keep this version of Java from checking for updates, other than not installing it Wink

I had a registry GPO I used to deploy prior to PP, but I'd like to avoid that for now

EDIT Additional question - when the U51 PP applies it removed the Update tab. So then the two option I can configure under that setting are to either allow Java to notify prior to or after downloading updates, and by default these are both not applied therefore no nag?

Java v7u51 don't check for updates Empty Here's my understanding...

To start.. remember: I / we aren't Java settings experts.

We use PolicyPak to tell Java "what to do", provided you have the stuff in hand you want to deliver.

That being said...

1. I've re-loaded Java 7 U 51.. 100% fresh... and.. I swear.. I see no more Updates tab.. at all.. even after a fresh install, and NO PPAM involved.

2. I think I see why our Pak definition has that setting grayed out.. It's because the IS no more Updates tab.. so there's no reason to have that setting anymore.

3. In poking around our new Pak, I found this setting: http://screencast.com/t/1NQiEiMR1
Which I think is what you want now.

There's no actual way to TEST this since there is no later Java at this time.

But, we're delivering to Java what Java wants according to Java's docs.

Make sense?

EDIT: To help future astronauts find this checkbox I've put this note directly into the Pak:

Hope that helps ! Thanks !

Java v7u51 don't check for updates Empty Re: Java v7u51 don't check for updates

Hey Jeremy,

Yes, I saw when I apply the U51 pak to a test machine the Update tab is no longer there. That was what I was pointing out in my edit in my first post. In previous paks you had to right click and select hide the whole tab for this to happen.

Under the GPO application manager in the pak config for u51 the Update tab shows two options in the dropdown, check but notify before download and check but notify before installing. In previous Java paks there were 3, notify before download, notify before install, and never check.

By selecting the never check option in previous versions you never, obviously, got the nag that an update was available because it never checked. I'll get the item you suggested on the Extras tab a whirl. And as long as I don't touch the two current Update options in the app manager for U51, neither of them will be configured to apply.

It's such a minor issue, but get a few dozen (or more for other folks) people griping that they don't want to see a nag to update and you start to wish you didn't have to install Java, or Adobe products ever.

Thanks again,

Michael

Java v7u51 don't check for updates Empty As a clarity point..

Post  jeremym Mon Jan 27, 2014 5:20 pm

Actually, to split hairs, the Update tab went away when the "Do not check for updates" checkbox's settings are delivered... not because of right-click tab-removal.

Just making the fine point for future astronauts reading this thread.

Keep the good questions coming. Thanks !
